GLOBAL RELEVANCE OF PANCHAKARMA IN PREVENTIVE HEALTH CARE: INTEGRATING TRADITIONAL WISDOM WITH MODERN WELLNESS PRACTICES

Introduction: Panchakarma, a cornerstone of Ayurveda, encompasses a set of detoxification and rejuvenation therapies designed to maintain physiological balance and prevent disease. Its relevance in preventive health care is increasingly recognized globally, aligning with the rise of integrative medicine and holistic wellness strategies. Methods: A systematic literature review was conducted using databases including PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar, along with classical Ayurvedic texts such as Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, and Ashtanga Hridaya. Inclusion criteria encompassed peer-reviewed clinical trials, observational studies, systematic reviews, and authoritative Ayurvedic literature. Exclusion criteria included non-peer-reviewed publications, editorials, and studies lacking methodological rigor. Results: Evidence suggests that Panchakarma procedures such as Virechana, Basti, and Nasya enhance immune function, regulate metabolism, and reduce stress, thereby contributing to disease prevention. Traditional texts emphasize personalized detoxification based on dosha constitution, while modern research corroborates physiological and biochemical effects, including modulation of inflammatory markers, lipid profiles, and gut microbiota. Globally, preventive health strategies incorporating Panchakarma have shown potential benefits in chronic lifestyle disorders and psychosomatic conditions. Discussion: Despite promising results, research is limited by heterogeneity in protocols, small sample sizes, and lack of standardized outcome measures. Cross-cultural adaptation and integration into modern preventive health care models require rigorous clinical validation, safety monitoring, and development of standardized procedures. Future prospects include global adoption as part of integrative preventive strategies, combining traditional insights with evidence-based medicine.
